Breed Profile

If you own a French Bulldog, you already know that they are affectionate and spunky. French Bulldogs are one of a few breeds of dogs that were never meant to be anything but companion pets. That's their one and only job, and they excel at it! These bat-eared bulldogs in miniature were a hit in French haute society and street society alike, and by the early 1900x were such an elite breed of dog that only the likes of the Rockefellers could get their hands on one. The breed's popularity has yet to waiver, and the number of registered French Bulldogs has increased over 300% in the past ten years! Here are some characteristics that make your dog distinctly a French Bulldog.

Attitude and Behavior

French Bulldogs are clownish and fun loving companions. In fact, they're often described as "a clown in the cloak of a philosopher." They are playful, gentle, and generally good with children. In fact, they're all-around amiable dogs, getting along well with other pets, strange people and strange dogs. French Bulldogs are regarded as excellent family pets. Despite their stocky build, they'd prefer to be a lap dog if you'll let them.

French Bulldogs are eager to please, and tend to form strong bonds with their owners. Nevertheless some can be stubborn, particularly when forceful methods of training are used. Reward-based training (such as with games or food) is best, but be careful not to reward with food too much, or your French Bulldog's waistline may suffer!

Exercise and Nutrition

French Bulldogs show a tendency toward obesity. Weight can be monitored with this simple test: you should be able to feel the ribs, but they should not be noticeably by sight. If you can't feel them at all, your French Bulldog may have packed on a few extra pounds. Feed a balanced diet, as recommended by your veterinarian, and adjust calories and exercise if needed.

French Bulldogs make calm and trustworthy housedogs as long as their exercise needs are met. A leisurely walk supplemented with ample play time will usually do the trick. Most French Bulldogs can't swim. Dog parks make a good alternative for the social French Bulldog. Be sure that any off-leash area your dog plays in is properly enclosed.

We suggest a setup similar to these, as the puppy doesn't feel locked up. A mudroom or spare bathroom can also be use in the same manner.
